Lets Boycott IPL

To begin with I wil tell you guys something about ICL,then we ll see how BCCI stopped ICL from succeeding, then we ll see how BCCI copied the idea of ICL and launched IPL.

The Indian Cricket League (ICL) was a private cricket league funded by Zee Entertainment Enterprises that operated between 2007 and 2009 in India. Its two seasons included tournaments between four international teams (The World, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) and nine domestic teams notionally located in major Indian cities. The matches were played in the Twenty20 format. While its establishment pre-dated the Indian Premier League, the ICL folded in 2009. Aside from commercial factors, the ICL lacked the support of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Zee Telefilms, part of the Essel group promoted by Subhash Chandra, had bid for the telecast rights to the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Although the highest bid, it was unsuccessful. In 2004, Subhash Chandra again bid for telecast rights and ended up in an inconclusive court battle. He made another bid for the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy rights and once again lost. He responded by creating the ICL. “They denied us the cricket content,” said Himanshu Mody, business head of ICL and Zee’s sports,“so, we had to create our own content.” [1] Zee Telefilms announced that it would partner with major infrastructure group IL&FS to create a new, ambitious cricket organisation, the Indian Cricket League.[2] with prize money of one million US dollars in the initial edition for the winning team.

The ICL was set up with a billion dollar Indian Rupee corpus, and was to initially comprise six teams playing Twenty20 cricket, with plans to expand to sixteen teams within three years and to eventually move to 50-over matches. These plans, if they had been realised, would have made the ICL the richest professional league in India. On 24 July 2007, some famous international names were announced to have signed to play in the ICL, including highest innings record-holder Brian Lara.

BCCI was mainly responsible for the fall of ICL. After defeating the ICL the BCCI came up with IPL...The IPL(Indian Premiere League is nothing but a copy of ICL)
BCCI is the richest among the cricket boards world wide and they are highly influential.

Now lets assume the war between ICL and IPL was just a competition between 2 business firms. we don’t have to care about why the ICL could not survive or how the BCCI mad IPL succeed. But what bothers me is the financial mismanagement of the IPL and BCCI as our national and state governments have been cheated by the BCCI as they haven’t paid tax for the income through IPL matches. we do not know if the BCCI simply cheated by not paying the tax or the government didn’t levy any tax. both are unacceptable.

If the BCCI didn’t pay the tax, what was the government (income tax department in particular) doing? How can they let BCCI escape without paying tax?
If the government itself had given exemption, that is also not acceptable. how can the government give exemption, why they didn’t levy tax? BCCI is not a non-profit organization or a charity trust.

HOW MANY OF US KNOW THAT THE INDIAN CRICKET TEAM DOESNT BELONG TO THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA? YES ITS TRUE,THE INDIAN CRICKET TEAM BELONGS TO THE BCCI WHICH IS AN INDEPENDENT BODY AND ITS INCOME DOESNT GO TO THE GOVERNMENT.

All other sports in India come under the ministry of youth affairs & sports, cricket alone is owned by BCCI(an independent body) which acts like a business firm.
If the income of BCCI is used for developing other sports, Indians would have achieved much more in the world of sports. so many great sportsmen who play other sports like hockey or football in India are helpless. They don’t get paid as high as cricketers.
The BCCI should be nationalized and its money should be taken by the government and can be used for developing other sports.

A few people have spoken about the financial mismanagement of BCCI and also called for the government to take over BCCI but that didn’t happen in the past and will not happen in future as well. It is because Our politicians hold important positions in the BCCI administration. They will save BCCI from being nationalized because they have interest in BCCI’ s wealth.

I call you guys to boycott IPL because if you spend money in any other way like going to a movie or buy any product, a part of your expense will go to the government as income or sales tax, But if you go to IPL match not a single paise from the IPL income goes to the government as tax...why should we spend our hard earned money to make people like SRK, Vijay Mallya, Preity Zinta or Ambani earn more without paying tax.

You guys just check how much tax you are paying for your income which could be jus a few lakhs per annum. Lets think about how much money the IPL teams should have paid as tax for their income. IPL is nothing but a group of businessmen using cricket to earn money. Other than IPL we have so many things to enjoy, so many entertainments are available so i request you guys to boycott IPL in the larger interest of our nation. please pass on this message to all your friends.
